Don't wear kilt if you want to walk on the streets of Split.
This was lesson learned the hard way by two Scottish tourists who visited main Split beach few days ago. Two of them thought that everyone in the world would be aware of kilts being part of Scottish cultural heritage. Unfortunately, some 30 or so young local men mistook kilts for common skirts and their fashion statement for the display of certain lifestyle which is not very popular in Croatia. Before two unfortunate Scots were able to explain the difference and before Croatian police had opportunity to intervene, one of them was forced to run for his life, while the other was subjected to savage beating, much to the delight of local crowds that never fail to take joy in such public spectacles.
Incidents like these are somewhat difficult to reconcile with all those claims of Croatia being modern, European, civilised country and that the tourism being the backbone of its economy.
Un-F***ing believable! This didn't happen due to a Scottish football team being in town, did it? I'd always thought the Dalmatians were a laid back group of fun-loving folks, especialy when it came to foreign tourists. A sad state of affairs. Has this incident been heavily publicized?

You should diferentiate between Dalmatians who live in small coastal towns where local people are smart enough not to attack their livelihood and Dalmatians who live in big cities.
Problem with Split is in being big enough to have its equivalent of Bronx and South Central while not big enough to have those neighbourhoods at the distance from its equivalent of Beverly Hills and Park Avenue.
